Sometimes you would like to do a project but are not certain how to start. Other times you know how to start but are concerned that you might get into it and not be able to finish. Some times you just need a helping hand and a bit of advice. If you have questions, you can e-mail the House Doctor at Housdoctor.com . There is no charge for this service if you are a past client of The House Doctor . Add a daytime and nighttime phone number where you can be reached.
If you need us to come to your house for help or advice, the charge for that service is $50 + $20/ quarter hour. This is not the same as the handyman service listed below. In this case you are paying for information and training not just labor. As an example, you might have us show you how to install a window. WE work TOGETHER on the first one and then you go on to install any additional ones knowing you have learned to do it right! If you get stuck on the project, you can always call for free advice over the phone. Additional visits are charged an additional $50 +$15/ quarter hour.
One of the most common questions arising during a whole house inspection is: "Who can we call to do the little odd jobs around the house?" Finding a qualified "handyman" is difficult! Big contractors can't afford to take on small jobs and the Good handymen often become big contractors. Or as the good handyman's business grows, he finds he must hire others to do the work. Soon he is always in the office or between jobs and the quality drops! To stay competitive, he must hire low paid laborers rather than quality craftsmen. This results in the low quality we see today on so many projects.
Most jobs will be priced in advance using an up-to-date pricing manual. Some small projects are billed time and materials. The first 2 hours cost $170 and all subsequent hours are billed at $85 - $45 per hour. Because of our extensive wide spread knowledge base we are often able do many different jobs on the same visit. We know our limitations and will not attempt any job we don't feel qualified to do. There is a saying "You have to be intelligent enough to know what you don't know." Too many "handymen" take on jobs outside their knowledge base and suddenly the "good deal" you got becomes a major financial nightmare. You can sleep soundly when you call the House Doctor.
When you call the House Doctor, you get the House Doctor. Your satisfaction and comfort are our primary concern. Yes, we carry liability insurance but if it comes to that, we have both already lost! If we bid on a larger job, you can be certain that we have considered the potential problems and have bid accordingly. Many contractors use a low bid to get the job and then add on 25% - 50% in unexpected cost over runs. That might be fine for government projects with deep pockets but in my opinion it has no place in the residential market. Another common practice in the contracting business is the "tear out, wait four weeks, and install process." Our policy has always been "have materials on the premises, then tear out." Everyone has heard the horror stories about the family doing dishes in the bathtub for a couple months while they wait for the backordered cabinets to arrive or having to use the toilet at the filling station while you wait for the bathroom stool to be replaced during a bathroom remodel. At this point, what is the value of that lowest bid? If you have only one stool in the house, you can be certain we will do everything in our power to make certain there is a working stool when we leave every night. Yes, it is easier to take everything out and then start the project, but usually that isn't the most convenient to the client. The next time you contract for a job, consider the whole picture not just the bottom line.
Computer service is just one more of the services available from House Doctor Services. We can set up new computers or reconfigure old ones. If you have an old computer needing an upgrade, we can do that too. If your old computer is too slow or needs more storage or memory, you can count on the House Doctor to give an honest opinion of what to add. We also set up home and small office peer-to-peer network systems using windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP operating systems for printer and storage resource sharing. Web site set-up is also available.
In house service carries the same fees associated with the handyman service. The first 2 hours cost $170 and subsequent time is $60 per hour. If you can bring the system to my office/shop, service is $40 per hour.
